The Toronto Science Fair invited teachers of Kindergarten to Grade 4 to organize class science projects or small group science projects during the winter term. They were then invited to have students make a one-minute video to record what they investigated and what they discovered. Many teachers and students took up this challenge and submitted their videos to the Toronto Science Fair Science Showcase. Follow the links below to view their discoveries.
This is a showcase of science at the Kindergarten, Primary and Junior level not a competition. TSF hopes that this experience will encourage our younger students to continue to investigate scientific questions.

In this experiment, we will test how different spoons—wooden, plastic, and metal—react when placed in hot water. Some materials are good conductors of heat & gets hot quickly, while others are bad and don’t get hot. Let’s put each spoon into the hot water and touch the other end to see which spoon gets the hottest. The steel spoon gets the hottest because it is a good conductor of heat. The wooden and plastic spoons stay cooler as they are bad conductors of heat. Finally, we know why we use different materials for different jobs, like using wooden or plastic spoons to avoid burning our hands!

The Kindergarten students at Fieldstone Day School have been learning about forces. To end their unit, they engaged in a sink and float experiment. From their previous knowledge, they needed to first predict if the chosen objects would sink or float and explain why they thought this. After, the students then tested if their predictions were right. The students finished their learning with coming to the conclusion that the light objects would float, and the heavy objects would sink.

In this experiment, we will create a small car using a balloon, a straw, and a piece of cardboard. When the balloon is inflated and released, the air coming out of the balloon pushes the car forward. This happens because the air is pushing in one direction, and the car pushes back in the opposite direction. The force of the air pushing the car forward is an example of Newton's Third Law in action. This helps us understand how forces work and how things can move when something pushes or pulls on them. We will see how the balloon's air pushes the car and makes it roll!

"The Fieldstone Day School, Grade One students conducted an experiment to see what happens to our teeth when we eat a lot of sugar. The students submerged egg shells in three liquids because egg shells and teeth have similar chemical compositions. The liquids they chose for their investigation were water, apple juice and soda. The egg shells were left in the liquid for one week, before taking them out to investigate the difference. Our students were horrified at the discolouration of the soda and apple juice egg shells. They noticed that the water egg shell was relatively unchanged. Our students now have a better understanding of the harmful effects too much sugar can have on our teeth.

In this experiment, we will compare how fast a frozen candle burns versus a candle kept at room temperature. We will take two candles of the same size and place one in the freezer to freeze it. The other candle will stay at room temperature. Once they are ready, we will light both candles at the same time and observe how quickly they melt and burn. We expect the frozen candle to burn slower because the cold temperature makes it harder for the wax to melt. The room temperature candle will likely burn faster. This experiment helps us understand how temperature can affect how things burn and change over time!

In this experiment, we will use baking soda, vinegar, and a balloon to explore a chemical reaction. When we mix baking soda (a powder) with vinegar (a liquid), they create a gas called carbon dioxide. To see this reaction more clearly, we will place a balloon on top of a bottle, and then add the baking soda and vinegar. As the chemical reaction happens, the carbon dioxide gas fills up the balloon, causing it to inflate. This experiment shows how two substances can react and create a gas that can make things move or change. It helps us understand how chemical reactions work and how gases are produced!

Grade 3 students made citrus fruit-powered batteries with lime and lemon to find out which fruit produces higher voltage. To make the battery, they inserted zinc and copper strips into fruit pieces, and connected them with wires. The citric acid in the fruit acts as the electrolyte. Their experiment showed that the lime-powered battery produced a higher voltage than the lemon-powered battery.

In this experiment, we will explore how air pressure can crush a can! First, we will heat up a small amount of water in an empty can, then place it upside down into a bowl of cold water. As the water inside the can heats up, it turns into steam and escapes, leaving no air inside the can. When the can is quickly placed in the cold water, the steam inside cools down, and the air pressure outside the can becomes much stronger than the pressure inside. This causes the can to crush! This experiment shows how air pressure works and how it can push on objects, even crushing them, when there is less air inside.

In this experiment, we will explore how gravity and magnets work together. Gravity is the force that pulls objects toward the Earth, while magnets have the ability to attract or repel certain materials. We will use magnets to see how they interact with objects and observe how gravity pulls everything down toward the ground. We will test how a magnet can attract metal objects and how gravity still pulls those objects down, even when a magnet is involved. This experiment will help us understand how both gravity and magnets can influence the way things move and interact with each other!

En utilisant un modèle simulé avec de l’eau colorée, des scintillantes qui représentent les organismes et les minéraux, on peut constater que des nouvels écosystèmes se forment après une éruption d’un volcan sous l’eau parce qu‘il y a de la chaleur, des organismes et des minéraux qui sont apportés sur le sol de l’océan.
